Does anyone here run X on a linux server? Is it worth using the extra memory for ease of configuring or is it better to just stick with consoles on a server?

I like consoles too but I'm having a *#$%$# of a time configuring it to be a login server and share user directories. I **hope** that maybe gnmoe or KDE might have some easier methods of doing it.

What kind of issues are you having?

Just trying to get it to authenticate users and share the user accounts (/home/user) to the workstations.

I say...run a samba server on the linux box for simple directory access and cmd line access. Setup a telnet server(with ssh) for more advanced cmd line access if needed.
Also you probably want a firewall in front of the server.
Oh yeah, specifics are really great. Please help us help you.

Well I don't really know any specifics. I'm not a networking retard or anything... except maybe with linux.
I have 2 firewalls in place so I'm not concerned with security at this time.
While running a Win2k server it was fairly easy to make it authenticate users and give them access to a user folder on the server itself.
This is what I'm trying to do with it. The question in this thread however was just to see it anyone ran X on a server and what they thought of the performance issues vs ease of configuring.

What I'm saying is it's pretty easy with Linux too.
XFree86/X11 are pretty high performance and don't take many resources. KDE/Gnome tend to hog resources(still less than 2k). If you feel uncomfortable with the shell then get a lightweight window manager like BlackBox/FluxBox/OpenBox etc.
For a personal server it's really not going to matter much unless the server is sub Pentium.
Then go to http://www.freshmeat.net/ and there are more server admin tools than you can shake at.
