Theres one thing I don't know about hardware. (and I know its all sort of the same anyways, just multi-processors in some cases and whatnot)

er. Anyways - I'm building a server.

1U rack, or 2U (maybe you can recommend one, they're so expensive :b)

Here are the specs:

Board:
Asus P4P800S P4/848P/FSB 800/DDR400/SATA/Audio/Lan/ATX Motherboard
* Specifications MFG-PART#: P4P800S
* CPU: S478 SUPPORTS INTEL P4/CELERON UPTO 3.6GHZ+; FSB 800/533/400MHZ
* CHIPSET: INTEL 848P/ICH5 CHIPSET
* MEMORY: 2DIMMS FOR DDR400/333/266 UP TO 2GB **SINGLE CHANNEL**
* IDE: 2 SERIAL ATA + 2 ATA100
* AUDIO: ADI AD1888 SOUNDMAX 6-CHANNEL AUDIO CODEC
* LAN: REALEK 8100C 10/100 LAN
* SLOT: 1*AGP(8X); 5*PCI
* **8*USB2.0**
* ATX, RETAIL

Drives:

Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive, Model WD800BB, OEM Drive only
Specifications:
Capacity: 80GB
Average Seek Time: 8.9 ms
Buffer: 2MB
Rotational Speed: 7200 RPM
Interface: IDE ULTRA ATA100
Features: Quiet Drive technology
Manufacturer Warranty: 1 year

For now we're only getting one drive - depending on the size of the rack we're going to try to pump 1TB of space into it and hope it doesn't catch fire.

Chip:

Intel Pentium4 Processor 2.4GHz (800FSB) 478pin CPU - (PWS)

Ram:
ELIXIR ORIGINAL 256MB PC3200 (400MHZ) DDR 184PIN DIMM (TRUE PC3200)
Going with only 2 chips of 256 for now - since the board is dual channel we're going to get 2 more 256's later or get 4 512's total. Should be sufficient for what we're doing (more than sufficient)

Now.. my questions are about the case.. I'm completely clueless about racks.. I know its just a skinny damn case that rackmounts and everything has to be sorta tiny in it - and use PCI .. forgot the name of them.. anyways they allow your pci cards to go sideways and you run the 'adapter' into the pci slot on the board..

so what I'll need is one of the 'tiny fin' fans for the processor.. what else.

Help. :)

(btw, I know crap all about new tech. Send me back to Pc133 world please. :b)

Update: Forgot to mention we're probably getting corsair/micron instead of the elixir

I also checked out Cobalt servers..

any dealings with them recently? (I hate cookie cutter systems.. but it wouldn't be so bad I guess)

Where can they be updated? etc now that sun dropped them.

Wasn't it picked up by FreeBSD?

Actually as far as server's are concerned P4's and AMD 64's are about equal since they are not designed to handle the task of being servers. That is why Intel made the Xeon and AMD has the Opteron.

Anyways - I went with a rental cobalt at 500 GB of bandwidth per month..

It definately does the job of what I set it up for... serving out music only.

Could rent 10 of these babies a month.. yum. :)

Glad you found a solution - was it cheap like you wanted?

99 a month.
rental. does the trick.

meh. we'll get more as we need them.

the specs aren't exactly amazing - but thats why its basically 'web server only, but i sort of brutalize anything i get my hands on'

Very nice! $99 should keep costs down :D

So when is the stream online?

That's not bad at all, looks like a good solution.
