Centrino laptops

I read some thing on some centrino laptops that they perform better than Pentium 4 ~2.0 Ghz even though the centrino is only ~1.4 Ghz.
Does anyone know why or how?

Yes, it is true...kinda. The centrino outperforms that proc in several benchmark tests but there were some tests that the P4 did better. I have a 1.4 Pentium M chip and I think they say it is ~ 2GHz P4 or something. The system is very fast and I can even play quite a few resource intensive games on it.

Neat. Have you actually compared it with a P4 laptop?

I guess the centrinos are no doubt better than other processors.

Wow, I didn't realize they were faster for stuff like that. But then again, why in the hell would you use a laptop for gaming? :p I thought the only thing better about Centrino's is that they used less power when not processing as much as it shuts off power to the parts of the chip that are not in use...

The original concept behind the Centrino was to help a hurting PC laptop industry. About 2 yrs ago, when I purchased my Powerbook, I had the choice between a 15" Powerbook that weighed 4.9 lbs or 14" PC ones weighing anywhere from 7 - 10 lbs. Now if I have to carry it around guess which one I ended up with.

Intel then made the wireless aspect of the chip the next important feature, and the actually speed came last. The battery power is lower because the chip is designed much differently than the Pentium so it doesn't need as much power. The speeds are appear to be deceitful but they are actually not. Intel just started to change from the Pentium chipset and when you do that speeds will vary. For example Intel's fastest processor is actually their 64-bit Itanium (Xeon class) processors at 1 ghz. This led to the whole Mac/PC argument which I won't get into because it's been heard enough.

My only problem with Intel is how do they expect to market newer products that are clocked slower than the Pentiums without advertising or trying to explain how these processors go faster.
