I would have to say its the best game ever.. not that many people played it though. Any of you? I used to play it with my father when I was about.. oh.. 3 years old ;) maybe thats why I have such fond memories of it.
Battlefield definately comes in close second though ;) I can't wait for vietnam and finally some brush to hide in and snipe from.
Oh! and another great game I just played at a recent lan party with some friends: Savage

weeeee I'm happy someone else has played them before. Now the only thing is i didn't really like any of the sequels.. but I didn't have them for the system.. just emulators so I guess that probably takes a lot of the kick out of them.
What do you feel about the differences between 'console' gaming and emulators?
I don't like gaming.. too much.. more or less used to love it though.. only other games I've played are text-based muds.. also why I type so darn fast.

I recall Dragon Warrior, it has been a long time.
A great game though.
As for emulators they are ok, but eh of course not the same.
I really wish companies would release all their old games on a CD for say $30 or so and include an emulator.

:) dragon warrior = pwnage :D
i'm sure they've considered rereleasing games on a cd/w emulators..
but they've probably rejected the idea, being too expensive.
it's more than cheap enough if they wanted to do it illegally.. but if they have to pay royalty rights and whatnot i'm sure there'd be no room for profit...

I think after a certain time you should be allowed to legally 'pirate' those games. I mean i have a copy of my old dragonwarrior, and a million other NES games and the problem is the NES system - not the games. After so long all it does is flick on and off..
How did we use these systems back then? I would have went crazy :b I love reliability.
Anyways.. are emulators/roms legal if you do hold a copy of the game in hand?

I'm not sure. I bought the game so I guess it could be 'legal'. but knowing all the specifics somewhere it probably isn't.
I do say, that I have a number of emulators, and lots of games :) .. I haven't done it in awhile, but its fun to play all the older games. NES & SNES & Sega Genesis run really well on a PC. Are there still heavy emulation sites around like their used to be?? Maybe someone can post links if the have some favorite sites.

Well lucky for me I don't have to settle for emulators. I still own a copy of the original Dragon Warrior with my still working NES.
I know I would be one of those people that would go out and buy collections of these old games if would be re-released on the Gamecube. I mean Sonic did it, and Mario did it on the Super NES (Mario All-Stars), I wonder why they just don't do this, you could probably fit about 30-40 of those little games on one cd.

I was just talking to my future brother-in-law about that. He's really into gaming and I asked him Nintendo had made such a set of games for the Gamecube. He said not yet but it's just a matter of time. When they do it'll finally be time for me to buy a Gamecube, my first new gaming system since 1991!

There's no way people would go for a certain timeframe in which to legalize pirating software. In the music industry, there's lots of money to be had from old Beatles tunes - what if Dragonwarrior gets "hot" - no corporation is going to want to give up the chance at a payday.
But then again, they did make Grand Theft Auto free last year (i think)... it was one of those car games.
btw, anyone played Interstate '76? Great tunes in that game. My funk band used to cover a few of them...

Hmm, I've always been told it was legal to download emulators and games that are no longer being produced (that's why there's no PS2, XBox & GameCube emulators). Or was I told wrong?

Nice try, but wrong. Copyright's don't expire because something has stopped being produced. Even though Ford stopped making the Thunderbird for a couple of years didn't mean that GM or Toyota could go jump at the opportunity.
Also just to add to how long copyrights really last, it's the reason that Apple cannot sell any of those Beatles song's on iTunes. Copyrights and contracts seem to last forever, even through death. So there will always be someone holding onto a piece of history that entitles them to collect whenever they realize they are losing a lot of money or aren't making any at all. Here's an example, probably not the best, but it's an example. Look at the Simpson's episode where the old guy claims to make Itchy and Stratchy, and although he didn't want any part of it, he showed just how greedy people can be when they find out what they are entitled to for some odd reason.

Nope, the covers I hate are the ones people know. Covers that are so obscure nobody will recognize them are ok.
That and 12345 from Sesame Street. (which is a killer song btw, check it out next time you hear it - it changes time signature about 6 times and starts out in 7/8)

You can't legally use emulators or pirate software unless the company who made it says it is ok. Basically saying it is "abandon ware"
For example System Shock 1 falls under this category and may be downloaded and played legally.
