View Full Version : Ongoing problems

I've worked with many hosts in the past, and have had the ups and downs of them all. However, I've never had any problems, *ever*, installing phpBB on other hosts.

Not the case with Host Rocket. Even a complete default installation will not work. So what did I do? I visited their "help" site and found a tutorial on how to make phpBB 2.x install perfectly.

Except, it doesn't. I've tried using the same package on prohosting and serverfly with no problems. So, instead of get real mad at someones imcompetence (obviously not my own), I tried using another php / mySQL message board system. Again, to no avail.

I'd include the list of errors, but I am afraid that would take many pages and days to dechiper.

As a side note: I really don't give a freak about having a "CGI Counter!!!!!!!" script. So unless this is fixed, I am going to have to recommend to the person who owns the account to cancel, unless this is fixed.

As a side note: I have contacted support several times (first hint), the help was less than satisfactory.

I notice that phpBB is running on some HostRocket sites, so apparently it's possible. Maybe somebody who's installed it successfully can help you out.

The point of the topic was I shouldn't have to find someone to help me . I've installed it myself many times on different hosts, the first time, with no complications.

I was just wondering why Host Rocket is different.

Most likely causes could be you didn't set the correct chmod permissions on files/directories that need it or you didn't put into the configuration file for the message board, the correct username/password/database name etc for mysql. It could also be that you didn't set up/assign a login for your database through the control panel for the message board or set up the database itself. You said you had problems getting other message boards to work as well so one of those is the most likely cause.

"I've never had any problems, *ever*, installing phpBB on other hosts. Not the case with Host Rocket."

Hi, Michael. Just FYI I've been able to install phpBB2 (versions 2.0.0, 2.0.1 and 2.0.2) on my own HR account as well as for two other HR users on their accounts (which were located on different HR servers) so at least in my experience there wouldn't seem to be any issues specific to HostRocket which would preclude the successful use of phpBB2.

"I'd include the list of errors, but I am afraid that would take many pages and days to dechiper."

Well assuming that we are talking about the phpBB2 forum at rushgaming.net taking a quick look I noted two problems right off the bat (there may be others which are hidden or less obvious but unless you can convince the customer to move to another host or you abandon the job ya gotta start somewhere):

1- The link to the test forum reveals a problem with the viewforum.php file. The error I received notes an "unexpected T_STRING" which generally means that there's an unescaped single quote...although the problem is referenced as being on line 245 taking a look at the file it's more likely to be due to an MIA single quote on line 243, ex: ['topicdays] rather than ['topicdays'].

2- Errors after clicking the "Usergroups" link suggest a problem in the groupcp.php file. There's a whole series of errors (4-6) which all seem to be caused by an "unexpected character" () on line 167 in that file.

Suggestions:

For starters try uploading new copies of these two particular files (viewforum.php and groupcp.php), and make sure that you are uploading the files in ASCII mode. Assuming that you haven't made any changes to the phpBB2 files manually and that you haven't applied any mods I'd tend to look to a problem in uploading as a likely suspect here. Exactly how are you uploading these files to HR? Are you using an FTP client such as WS_FTP LE (and if so is this the same program you used in your more successful installations at other web hosts), are you using the HR File Manager, or...?

I've installed it many times over, no problems whatsoever.

Perhaps HR should consider getting more support staff, for free (hint hint). :)

I just installed PHPBB2 last night on my HR account and no problems. One common problem that I think happens alot, and I did it myself, it when it asks for the database server, you do not put your IP or webstie name, but localhost.

I would be very happy to help you install it. Send me an email to webmaster@celticradio.net. Do not use my contact pages on my site. For some reason my sendmail is not working. I am on hostrocket 17.

lol me thinks the same

I've never used phpbb but I use vb, and he probalby made a database named "cerb" and then as opposed to setting some config file for his db to be "username_cerb" he set it to just plain "cerb" or some other mistake. Whoah a whole two other hosts, you must be an expert ;) :p

Oh, another worthless post! Hooah! Hate to break it to you Smart Guy, but I know how to setup Databases and configure them. Next.

I just installed PHPBB2 last night on my HR account and no problems. One common problem that I think happens alot, and I did it myself, it when it asks for the database server, you do not put your IP or webstie name, but localhost.

Already know that, but thanks.

Those are all correct and setup correctly. But thanks.

However, I would like to thank don5408 for his help. For some reason when i had uploaded the files they got corrupted. You mentioned these faults in the code, and upon downloading the files from Host Rocket they were fine. But I did re-upload them to get rid of some errors. However, I had to do this with all of the .php files. Somehow, they all got corrupted. Quite a few problems still exist, but things are getting better. Oh, yes, this is the same FTP program I have used on other hosts.

Posting, Replying, and Registering were all giving errors as well Don. While those are fixed now. I just cannot understand while I am having problems now, when I never have before.

What are you 12?

It couldn't possible be something you did wrong?

:D

"I would like to thank don5408 for his help"

You're welcome, happy to hear of your progress!

"For some reason when i had uploaded the files they got corrupted. You mentioned these faults in the code, and upon downloading the files from Host Rocket they were fine. Well from what you're describing (that upon downloading the files they appear fine yet re-uploading them as is eliminated the errors, plus the fact that most if not all *.php files were effected) it sure sounds to me like for whatever reason the *.php files ended up being uploaded in binary rather than ASCII mode the first time around.

"I just cannot understand while I am having problems now, when I never have before."

Hard to say after the fact, in any case I make it a point not to dwell on such mysteries...if all (or at least most) is well at this point I'd tend to just file the experience away under S for *Stuff Happens* without losing much sleep over it. If I had a buck for everytime I did everything right (at least as I saw it) and things went wrong anyway I'd be rich. Don't sweat it. ;-)

Good luck resolving those few lingering problems you mentioned, if you hit a dead end feel free to post details.

Accusing me of being twelve with what you have said is a bit hypocrytical. The first post you were not even talking to me, you were refering to me in the third person, and obvious sign of disrepect. And then your wise crack about being an expert? And I am twelve?

While I would hate to start a flame war (and win), I would first state, I do nothing wrong. And I am not twelve, in fact, I am much, much worse. I am in the Army Infantry.

And then, people always try to do smilies like they are joking when in fact they mean what they have said / typed. It's much like saying "Sorry" when in fact, you are not.

Take a hint from Don, and try to post something meaningful and appropriate.

The fact is that your first post made you sound like an ass, and that there must be something wrong with hostrocket because you were able to install phpbb on 2 different hosts.

Except, it doesn't. I've tried using the same package on prohosting and serverfly with no problems. So, instead of get real mad at someones imcompetence (obviously not my own), I tried using another php / mySQL message board system. Again, to no avail.

The fact is, it was your incompetence, not hostrocket's. If your first post had more detail in it, then maybe you would have gotten better replies. The fact is that all you said was basically, that it didn't work, and that someone else must have screwed something up. How do you expect to get a response on how to make it work, with the info you posted?

While I would hate to start a flame war (and win), I would first state, I do nothing wrong.

You don't do things wrong? Didn't you screw up uploading the files? Why didn'y you just upload the tar.gz file and gunzip, and untar the files, then you wouldn't have a problem uploading text files in binary :p
