Just trying to decide which is a better bulletin board system. Post your experience or knowledge with either or both, thanks.
Either,
PHP BB www.phpbb.com
or
Invision Board www.invisionboard.com?

Personally I prefer phpBB over most boards. Even over vB because it's free.

Personally I prefer IB 3.1.x since it uses mySQL now and is highly customizable, but if I had to choose between those 2 I would have to go with phpBB too.

Well I went and used Invision Board and so far its been very easy to use and highly customizable. The documentation though is lacking, oh well what do you expect for something thats free. :D

Version 1.1 of InvisionBoard should be out in the next few weeks and adds quite a few new toys to the already awesome package. IBf is my personaly choice.

phpBB and IB are both free.
Try both and use the one that you enjoy most.

Invision Board, is the best, and it has more features and is more reliable than phpBB.
Especially the new 1.1 version, is even better, and they have done a super job to facilitate the customization of the whole forum, through forums.
Just a thought.....
I use Invision Board. Simple to set up and you can mod it in almost any way.
phpbb is great also, same can be said.
Invision Board uses less resources on the server then phpbb, but no so much that you would notice, until you get into the 10' so thousands of post counts.
Your choice really...

I would suggest not using Ikonboard at Host Rocket. It's a fine board but our account was recently suspended because HR said that we were using too many cpu resources. The sad thing is they just up and suspended the account without giving us any warning or a chance to disable the BBS for a while to back up the data and maybe switch to another BBS package.
I'd go with phpBB if I were you, PHP is much more resource friendly than Perl scripts.

Well to add on the Ikonboard stuff all production on it has stopped and you may notice the site no longer exists. I would have to say either Inivision 1.1 or OpenBB 1.1 (currently still in beta testing but should be publicly released soon) are the top of the free boards right now. phpBB would be a close second but the 2.0 release just isn't as good as it was when it came out and other places are capitalizing on it. As far as pay boards are concerned UBB and VB are both great, but unless UBB release version X without their webhosting VB will win out.

Can anyone advise what I need to do with the database requirements for phpBB with my site on HR. Do I need to get tech support to set something up for me.

You don't need tech support to do anything as you set up the MySQL database yourself from the control panel.
Remember that your HR user name (usually the first seven or so letters of your WEB site name) will be added to the database name and user name your create. If your WEB site is thisismywebsite and you create a MySQL database test it will be named thisism_test and the user imauser will be thisism_imauser.
The other gotcha is to remember to create and assign a user to your database.
Check out this thread (http://forums.hostrocket.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10886&highlight=phpBB) and search this forum for phpBB and/or MySQL.
Good luck.

I have to go with phpBB.. It's not the simplest to setup, but it works very well, when it is..
Lot better than the crappy thing that hostrocket saddles us with (XMB)

Depends on if you have fantastico installed! :) I also personally prefer PhpBB (or e107). E107.org has the best system in my opinion but thats a CMS! Content management system.. and its great for everything..
I recommend everyone give it a try. You won't be dissapointed.

I prefer PhpBB just because I've been a part of boards using both, and PhpBB just seems to have a little bit slicker feel. And I've had few problems with it.

Hmmm, to correct the first couple of posts...
Invision Board is at version 1.3 and 2.0 is coming out this month.
..
It is highly customizable, and there is a lot of documentation, its in the forums and invision power. You can do anything with Invision board. I have 2 myself. and they're great
In my opinion, I have never seen a cool looking phpBB board.. no one ever customizes it, so they always look crappy :P
*now someone show me a customized skin for a phpBB board*

My PhpBB has a custom skin, but not my own. I downloaded one that I liked and fit my site color scheme. There are a whole lot of skins available for the PhpBB and if you read up on it, it's not that much more difficult to put your own customizations into it. You can see what I've done with mine at: http://www.threechordme.com/forum and compare that to the somewhat standard at http://www.phpbb.com
There is also a section at phpbb.com that shows other skins that have been developed and just how different you can make it look. Mine is a pretty tame modification in comparison to some others.

Most BB's have loads of cool (ish) skins people have done that you can d/l. You just have to search for them.
